Hope that Outlasts Grass

 Hope That Empowers Love
1 Peter 1:22 - 2:8

OVERVIEW

1 Peter 1:22–25 (and extensions into 1 Peter 2:1–8), is emphasizing that true holiness in the Christian life flows from the gospel and the enduring Word of God. The preacher contrasts the fleeting, withering nature of human life and achievements ("like grass") with the eternal, imperishable Word of the Lord that brings new birth. Believers, having been born again through this living Word, are purified to love one another sincerely and deeply (fervently, from the heart). Holiness is evidenced by:

Genuine, brotherly love (phileo + agape) for fellow believers

Obedience to God's truth / Word

Craving Scripture like newborn babies crave milk for spiritual growth

The sermon stresses the Word of God's triple role:  It brings salvation (new birth), endures forever, and produces maturity. Peter’s imagery of Christ as the precious living cornerstone and believers as living stones built into a spiritual house reinforces unity, purpose, and security in Jesus.  Peter provides a  strong encouragement that Jesus removes shame and condemnation—offering full forgiveness and acceptance—contrasting human tendencies to shame others with Christ's grace.

Sermon Outline

1. Introduction: The Temporary vs. the Eternal

o Human life and glory are fleeting ("like grass" – Peter quotes from Isaiah)

o Contrast: "The word of the Lord endures forever" (1 Peter 1:25)

2. Non-conformity to this world (1:14-16)

3. Motivation that comes from Christ (1:17-21)

4. The Command to Deep, Sincere Love (1 Peter 1:22-25)

o Believers are purified by obeying the truth.  Results  in sincere love for one another

o Command: "Love one another deeply, from the heart"

o Greek terms: phileo (brotherly affection) + agape (fervent, Christ-like love)

o Holiness is visible through genuine love (cross-reference John 13:35)

5. The Basis: Born Again by Imperishable Seed (1 Peter 1:23)

o New birth is spiritual (John 3 – Nicodemus), not physical

o Born once → two deaths; born twice → one death

o New birth comes through the living, enduring Word of God (not perishable human seed)

o Cross-references: Romans 10:17 (faith comes by hearing the Word); Hebrews 4:12 (Word is living & active)

6. The Eternal Anchor: The Word of God (1 Peter 1:24–25)

o Human glory fades like flowers; God's Word never fades

o Jesus' promise: "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away" (Matthew 24:35)

o The preached gospel is this same eternal Word

7. Practical Implications & Growth in the Word (1 Peter 2:1–3)

o Put away malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, slander/unkind speech

o Crave pure spiritual milk (the Word) like newborns → so you may grow in salvation

o The Word: brings salvation, endures forever, produces spiritual maturity

o "Taste and see that the Lord is good" (Psalm 34:8)

8. Christ the Cornerstone & the Spiritual House (1 Peter 2:4–8)

o Jesus = the living Stone, rejected by men but chosen & precious to God

o Believers = living stones built into a spiritual house / holy priesthood

o Christ = the cornerstone (Isaiah prophecy fulfilled)

o Promise: Whoever trusts in Him "will never be put to shame"

9. Application: No Shame in Christ

o Jesus receives sinners with compassion (examples: woman at the well, woman caught in adultery)

o He offers grace + truth ("neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more")

o No condemnation for those in Christ (Romans 8:1); no shaming replay of past sins

o Believers should extend the same mercy & forgiveness to one another

10. Closing Prayer & Benediction

o Thanksgiving for Jesus the cornerstone

o Prayer for release from shame/condemnation

o Call to love others with the mercy God has shown us
