Chosen to Live Differently
Chosen to Live Differently
1 Peter 2:9-17
Theme: Because we are chosen by God and called out of darkness into His light, we are called to live differently by living in harmony with God’s design through willing submission in every sphere of life.
Hearers of the Word:
1. Our New Identity (1 Peter 2:9–10)
o Chosen people
o Royal priesthood
o Holy nation
o God’s special possession
o Purpose: Declare the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light
2. Our New Calling (1 Peter 2:11–12)
o Abstain from sinful desires (they war against your soul)
o Live good lives among unbelievers so that even when slandered, your deeds glorify God
Statement of Truth:
If you forget who you are, you will live like who you used to be.
3. The Overarching Theme: Harmony (1 Peter 2:13 - 3:12)
o “Be like-minded / live in harmony with one another”
o Be sympathetic, love one another, compassionate, humble
o Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but repay with blessing
o Parallel passage: Romans 12:16–19
4. How Harmony Is Achieved (Two Foundational Principles)
a. Revere God as Lord of all (Vertical relationship first)
b. Respect God’s design for orderly arrangement (Greek = “arrange under”)
o Not about better/less or greater value
o Analogy: Musical harmony is vertical arrangement for beauty and order
o Opposite = Dissonance (rebellion, as seen in Satan’s fall)
5. Four Spheres of Harmony (The Coming Sections)
o In the world → Submit to governing authorities (2:13–17)
o In the workplace → Submit to masters/bosses (even unfair ones) (2:18–25)
o At home → Submit to one another in marital and family roles (3:1–7)
o In heaven → Perfect order: Everything subject to Christ (3:22; also Christ’s submission to the Father)
6. Application / Challenge
o We declare God’s praises not only with words but with harmonious lives.
o Chosen people don’t fight for rights or create discord; they willingly submit to God’s design.
o This week: Choose harmony over discord. Trust God’s arrangement. Repay evil with blessing.

Three Discussion Questions for Personal Review
1. Identity & Memory Pastor Steven Said, “If you forget who you are, you will live like who you used to be.” Which of the four descriptions in 1 Peter 2:9 (“chosen people, royal priesthood, holy nation, God’s special possession”) do you most easily forget? How does remembering that truth specifically help you respond with harmony instead of discord in a difficult relationship or situation right now?
2. Harmony vs. Dissonance Pastor Steven used a musical analogy of harmony (orderly vertical arrangement) versus dissonance (rebellion against God’s design). In which of the four spheres (world/government, workplace, home, or your heart’s attitude toward God) do you most struggle to “arrange yourself under” God’s design? What would repaying evil with blessing look like practically in that area this week?
3. Submission & Freedom Pastor Steven emphasizes that biblical submission is not about being less valuable or weak, but about trusting God’s wise order for our good and His glory. How does viewing submission through the lens of “chosen to live differently” and “royal priesthood” change the way you think about submitting to authorities (at work, in government, or in the home)? What is one specific step you can take this week to live out this kind of harmony?
