Clay in His Hand

Clay in His Hand
Jeremiah 18:1–6

I. Introduction

• The question many carry: What is God doing with my life?

• Text: God sends Jeremiah to the potter’s house (Jer. 18:1–6).

• Cornerstone: We are clay in His hand.

• Illustration: Potter reworks collapsed clay.

General Observations & Lessons

1. It would have been jarring.

2. It would have been humbling.

3. It would have stirred both dread and hope.

4. It would have clarified his own calling.

5. This moment would have stayed with him.

Statement of Truth:

Judgment is not the end of the story if the clay remains in the hand.

II. God Sends Us to Watch Where He Is Already Working (vv. 1–3)

• “Go down… and there I will let you hear.”

• Obedience precedes revelation.

• Ordinary places become sacred when God is working.

• Tie to Experiencing God: watch and join.

III. The Vessel Can Be Spoiled While Still in the Potter’s Hand (v. 4)

• Spoiled in the potter’s hand—not after leaving the wheel.

• Collapse is not abandonment.

• The potter reworks it into another vessel.

• Illustration: Father’s hands over the boy’s on the wheel.

IV. God Claims the Right of the Potter (vv. 5–6)

• “Can I not do with you as this potter has done?”

• Sovereignty and mercy together.

• We cannot stay as we are and go with God.

• Moldable means yielded, not weak.

• Illustration: Hardened clay can only be broken.

V. Living as Clay Means Watching, Yielding, and Joining

• Go where He sends; stay soft; release the first design.

• Do not leave the wheel when spoiled.

• Illustration: “He kept giving me His hands.”

VI. Conclusion

• You are clay in His hand—the safest place.

• Stay, watch, yield, join, trust.

Application Questions

1. Where have you been trying to be the potter instead of the clay?

2. What “first vessel” are you protecting that God may want to rework?

3. When pressure comes, do you stay on the wheel or look for a way off?

4. What would it look like this week to remain moldable in the Master’s hand?

5. Where might God already be working—calling you to “go down” and watch before you speak or plan?
